Our Pick: Ooni
Check price on Amazon →Ooni Koda 2 Pro vs Karu 2 Pro (2026): Gas or Wood at the Same Price?
Only $50.05 separates Ooni's two Pro ovens, so this is a fuel decision, not a budget one. Most buyers should take the Ooni Koda 2 Pro at $798.95: two more inches of deck and push-button repeatability. Take the Karu 2 Pro at $849.00 only if you actually want a live wood fire. Prices verified August 8, 2026.

Buy the Ooni Koda 2 Pro at $798.95 unless you specifically want to cook over wood, in which case buy the Karu 2 Pro at $849.00. That is the whole verdict, and the reason it is that blunt is that the two ovens are only $50.05 apart on Amazon as of August 8, 2026. Price is not deciding this. Fuel is.
These are Ooni's two Pro ovens, the upper trim of the gas line and the upper trim of the multi-fuel line, and they are unusually well matched. Both sit in the 950°F class. Both are heavy, serious, permanently sited equipment (66 lb for the Koda, 61.7 lb for the Karu). The Koda 2 Pro gives you an 18 inch deck, dual independently controlled lateral burners, a propane or natural gas connection and the Ooni Connect Bluetooth temperature hub. The Karu 2 Pro gives you 16 inches and a real fire: wood or charcoal for flavour, with gas available when you cannot be bothered. Two inches and a dial against smoke and a learning curve.
Disclosure, as always: Ooni did not pay for, place, or preview this comparison, and no brand buys a ranking on this site. Both product links go to Amazon, where we earn a commission as an Amazon Associate if you buy, at no additional cost to you, and it has never tilted a verdict. Prices are live Creators API pulls from August 8, 2026. Koda 2 Pro specifications come from ooni.com the same day; Karu 2 Pro figures are the ones our verified dataset holds. Where a number is not published, we say so rather than reaching for memory.
The short version
- Which to buy: the Koda 2 Pro at $798.95 for most people. It is cheaper by $50.05, bakes 18 inches against 16, and turns on with a dial.
- Buy the Karu 2 Pro at $849.00 for one reason only: you want real live-fire wood flavour, and you accept fire management, ash and a smaller deck to get it.
- Heat does not decide this. Ooni states 950°F max for the Koda 2 Pro (controllable from 320°F) and the Karu 2 Pro sits in the same ~950°F class.
- Deck size goes to gas: 18 in on a stone measuring 21 in front and 18 in rear, against the Karu 2 Pro's 16 in.
- Weight is close enough to ignore: 66 lb for the Koda 2 Pro, 61.7 lb for the Karu 2 Pro. Neither is an oven you move on a whim.

01 · The Pick for Most Buyers
Our Pick
Ooni Koda 2 Pro
Two more inches of deck, $50.05 less money, and heat you set with a dial.
On the bench: Ooni-stated 950°F maximum with a controllable range from 320°F; 18 in max pizza on a 0.8 in cordierite stone measuring 21 in front and 18 in rear; 66 lb; propane or natural gas. Live at $798.95, verified August 8, 2026.
Repeatability is the real feature. The Koda 2 Pro reaches Ooni's stated 950°F on a dial and holds there, with a controllable range down to 320°F that makes it usable for bread and roasting too. Nothing about a weeknight pizza with it is a project. The Karu 2 Pro can reach the same class, but only once you have built and stabilised a fire.
The other two things only this oven does, on verified figures: it runs on natural gas from a line as well as propane from a tank, which turns it into a permanent plumbed fixture, and it carries Ooni Connect, a Bluetooth hub that reports live ambient temperature plus a food probe reading to the phone app. Ooni also claims 420 percent better heat distribution and 33 percent larger capacity than the previous generation; both are Ooni's claims, not our findings. The step above it is covered in Koda 2 Pro versus Koda 2 Max, and the whole gas ladder is in best gas pizza ovens.
The honest cost: no smoke, no fire, no romance. At 66 lb it also stays where you put it. If the naming across Ooni's range has you confused about which model is which size, our Koda lineup decoder untangles it.
- Fuel
- Propane (tank) or natural gas (line), 28 mBar regulator and hose per the listing
- Max pizza size
- 18 in (stone 21 in front, 18 in rear)
- Peak temp
- 950°F max, controllable from 320°F (Ooni stated)
- Stone
- 0.8 in cordierite
- Weight
- 66 lb
- Unboxed dimensions
- 26.85 x 25.67 x 15.47 in
- Connectivity
- Ooni Connect Bluetooth hub: ambient temp plus food probe
- Live price (8/8/26)
- $798.95
What we like
- 18 in deck, two inches more than the Karu 2 Pro
- $50.05 cheaper at our live check
- 950°F max with a controllable range down to 320°F
- Propane or natural gas
- Ooni Connect ambient and probe readings on the phone
- No fire to build, no ash to clear
Worth noting
- No wood option at all
- 66 lb, permanent placement
- Ooni's percentage claims are unverifiable by us
Who should buy it: Buy the Koda 2 Pro if you want the biggest sensible deck, heat you can set and forget, and pizza on a weeknight without planning. It is also the pick if a natural gas line is available to you.
What we don't like: It cannot burn wood, so the flavour ceiling is whatever gas can do, and at 66 lb it is a permanent installation rather than a portable oven.
Bottom line: The Koda 2 Pro is the default answer here and it is not close on paper: bigger deck, lower price, same heat class, and none of the fire management. Add Ooni Connect for live temperature on your phone and a natural gas option for a permanent install, and this is the oven that gets used on a Wednesday rather than admired on a Saturday.
02 · The Pick if You Want Live Fire

Ooni Karu 2 Pro
Real wood fire at the top of Ooni's multi-fuel line, with gas available when you cannot be bothered.
On the bench: 16 in cooking size, ~950°F class, 61.7 lb, multi-fuel (wood and gas). Live at $849.00, verified August 8, 2026. Stone thickness and burner details are not published in our verified dataset.
Buy this for flavour, or do not buy it. The Karu 2 Pro is the top trim of Ooni's multi-fuel line: 16 inches, ~950°F class, 61.7 lb, and it takes wood or charcoal as well as gas. Everything it gives up against the Koda 2 Pro (two inches of deck, $50.05, and the convenience of a dial) is the price of a real fire. Our full Karu 2 Pro review goes further, and gas versus wood-fired is the argument in the abstract.
Go in clear-eyed about the costs, though. A wood fire means lighting, feeding, watching, and ash afterwards. It means storing fuel somewhere dry. Recovery between pizzas depends on your fire management rather than on a dial, which is why our heat-recovery metric consistently favours gas at the same heat class. And 16 inches is a smaller deck than the cheaper gas oven beside it, which is a genuinely odd result for the pricier model.
If you want to cross-shop outside Ooni at this tier, Karu 2 Pro versus Gozney Arc XL covers the premium alternative, and best wood-fired pizza ovens covers the field if wood is non-negotiable. For the family-level naming question, Karu versus Koda explains why these two lines exist at all.
- Fuel
- Multi-fuel: wood and gas

- Weight
- 61.7 lb
- Stone

- Connectivity
- Not published in our verified dataset
- Live price (8/8/26)
- $849.00
What we like
- Genuine live wood fire, the thing gas cannot do
- Gas fallback for low-effort nights
- Same ~950°F class as the Koda 2 Pro
- Slightly lighter at 61.7 lb
Worth noting
- 16 in deck, two inches less than the cheaper gas Pro
- $50.05 more expensive
- Fire building, fuel storage and ash
- Recovery depends on you, not a dial
Who should buy it: Buy the Karu 2 Pro if wood-fired flavour is the reason you want an outdoor oven in the first place, and you will genuinely enjoy managing a fire rather than resenting it.
What we don't like: It costs $50.05 more than a gas oven with a bigger deck, fire management adds real work and ash, and heat recovery between pies is only as good as your fire tending.
Bottom line: The Karu 2 Pro exists to do the one thing the Koda cannot: burn wood. It matches the ~950°F class, gives up two inches of deck and asks $50.05 more, and in exchange you get genuine live-fire flavour and the option to fall back to gas on a lazy evening. That is a completely legitimate purchase, for a specific kind of buyer.
03 · Cheapest Way Into Multi-Fuel

Ooni Karu 12
Wood fire for around $249: find out whether you actually enjoy it before spending $849.00.
On the bench: ~950°F class, 12 in cooking size, multi-fuel (wood and gas). Around $249 on ooni.com (list $349) as of August 8, 2026. Weight not published in our verified dataset.
The sensible test purchase. Wood fire is romantic in the abstract and a chore for a meaningful number of people who buy into it. The Karu 12, at around $249 on ooni.com against a $349 list, is the cheapest way to discover which sort you are. It is a 12 inch first-generation oven in the ~950°F class and takes wood, charcoal or gas.
Note the naming while you are here: the 12 is inches, whereas the 2 in Karu 2 Pro is a generation. Our Karu 12 review has the detail, and how to choose a pizza oven frames the fuel decision from scratch.

- Max pizza size
- 12 in
- Peak temp
- ~950°F class

- Price
- $249 (ooni.com, list $349)
What we like
- Cheapest genuine wood-burning Ooni
- Same ~950°F class as the Pro models
- Low-risk way to test whether you enjoy fire management
Worth noting
- 12 in deck
- First-generation hardware
- Weight not published in our verified dataset
Who should buy it: Buy the Karu 12 if you are curious about wood but not yet committed, or if budget is the binding constraint and 12 inches is enough pizza.
What we don't like: Twelve inches is a small deck, it is first-generation hardware, and its weight is not published in our verified dataset.
Bottom line: Before you spend $849.00 on live fire, consider spending around $249 to find out whether you like tending one. The Karu 12 is the first-generation 12 inch multi-fuel Ooni, it reaches the same ~950°F class, and it is the cheapest genuine wood-burning oven in the range.
04 · Best for Entertaining (Big-Ticket)

Ooni Koda 2 Max
Two pizzas at once on a dual-zone floor: the answer when throughput, not fuel, is the problem.
On the bench: House-verified ~950°F across a 20 in usable cooking floor with dual independently controlled heat zones (marketed as 24 in); 95 lb. Live at $1,298.94, verified August 8, 2026.
A different question, worth asking. Plenty of people run the Koda 2 Pro against the Karu 2 Pro when their real complaint is that one pizza at a time is too slow for the number of people they feed. The Koda 2 Max is the only Ooni that solves that: two pies side by side, dual independent zones, house-verified ~950°F class.
It costs around $1,299 and weighs 95 lb, and Ooni markets it as 24 inches where our data reads 20 usable. Full detail in the Koda 2 Max review, with the wider shelf in best pizza ovens over $1,000.

- Live price (8/8/26)

What we like
- Two pizzas side by side
- Dual independent heat zones
- Best recovery of any Ooni we track
Worth noting
- 95 lb, permanent placement
- Around $450 above the Karu 2 Pro
- Gas only, so no wood option at all
Who should buy it: Buy the Koda 2 Max if you host at scale and the bottleneck is throughput. Two pizzas at once and dual-zone control are things neither Pro can do at any price.
What we don't like: 95 lb and permanently sited, a big price step above both Pro models, and a marketed 24 inch figure our data reads as 20 usable inches.
Bottom line: If what you actually need is more pizzas per hour rather than a different fuel, neither Pro is the answer. The Koda 2 Max bakes two at once on what our house data reads as a 20 inch usable floor, with two independently controlled heat zones. It is around $1,299 and 95 lb, so it is a host's oven.
05 · The Premium Cross-Brand Cross-Shop

Gozney Arc XL
The other premium option: 950°F and 16 inches, bought for Gozney's build rather than its specs.
On the bench: Verified: 16 in cooking size, 950°F, live at $999.99 on August 8, 2026. Weight and external dimensions are not published in our verified dataset.
The cross-brand sanity check. The Gozney Arc XL is a verified 950°F oven with a 16 inch deck at $999.99, so against the Koda 2 Pro it is $201.04 more for two inches less, and against the Karu 2 Pro it is $150.99 more for the same 16 inches and no wood option.
Its case is build and design, which is a real argument but not a spec one. Our verified dataset does not hold its weight or external dimensions, so we do not print them; Gozney publishes those on its own product page. See the Arc XL review, the direct Karu 2 Pro versus Arc XL comparison, and best premium pizza oven for the whole tier.

- Max pizza size

- Weight

- Live price (8/8/26)
- $999.99
What we like
- Verified 950°F, the same class as both Ooni Pros
- Gozney rolled steel construction and design
- Strong brand reputation for heat retention
Worth noting
- $201.04 more than the Koda 2 Pro for two inches less deck
- Gas only, so no answer to the Karu's wood fire
- Weight and dimensions not in our verified dataset
Who should buy it: Buy the Arc XL if you want a Gozney specifically, for the rolled steel construction and the design, and 16 inches of gas-only deck is enough.
What we don't like: It is the most expensive oven here short of the Koda 2 Max, matches the Karu's deck without offering wood, and publishes fewer verified specifications than either Ooni.
Bottom line: If you are shopping the premium tier rather than the Ooni range specifically, the Arc XL is the cross-brand alternative. It is a verified 950°F, 16 inch gas oven at $999.99, which means it costs more than either Ooni Pro while matching the Karu's deck size. What you pay for is Gozney's rolled steel build and design.

How we chose
Both ovens were verified live before we wrote anything: price, stock and listing image pulled from Amazon's Creators API on August 8, 2026, returning $798.95 for the Koda 2 Pro and $849.00 for the Karu 2 Pro. The Koda's deeper specifications are Ooni's own published figures from ooni.com the same day, including the 950°F maximum, the 320°F to 950°F controllable range, the 18 inch maximum pizza on a stone measuring 21 inches at the front and 18 at the rear, the 0.8 inch cordierite stone, the 66 lb weight and the 26.85 x 25.67 x 15.47 inch unboxed dimensions. Ooni also claims 420 percent better heat distribution and 33 percent larger capacity than the previous generation; those are Ooni's claims and we present them as such. For the Karu 2 Pro our verified dataset holds the 16 inch cooking size, the ~950°F class, the 61.7 lb weight and the multi-fuel capability, and we leave the rest blank rather than guessing.
The judging spine is the same on every page here: peak floor temperature, membership in the 60-Second-Pizza Club (ovens whose floors run hot enough to produce a Neapolitan pie in roughly a minute), and heat recovery across a real run of pizzas rather than one showpiece bake. That last metric is where fuel type stops being a preference and becomes a practical difference, because a gas burner recovers on a dial while a wood fire recovers only as fast as you feed it. We are a research and verification desk, not a physical test lab: manufacturer numbers are labeled as stated, our own accumulated figures as house data, and unverified figures are simply omitted.
Key terms
- Multi-fuel
- An oven that burns wood or charcoal and also accepts a gas burner, which is what the Karu line is. It is not a compromise between the two so much as an option on both, and the gas fallback is a bigger part of the appeal than most buyers expect.
- Heat recovery
- How fast an oven returns to temperature after a cold pizza pulls heat out of the stone. It is the metric that separates a good oven from a good first pizza, and it favours gas at any given peak temperature because a burner responds instantly while a wood bed responds to fuelling.
- Controllable range
- The span between an oven's lowest usable setting and its peak, not the maximum alone. Ooni states 320°F to 950°F for the Koda 2 Pro, which is what makes it a bread and roasting oven as well as a pizza oven.
- Pro (as a model suffix)
- An Ooni trim level, not a size and not a fuel. Koda 2 Pro is the upper trim of the gas line at 18 in; Karu 2 Pro is the upper trim of the multi-fuel line at 16 in. Two ovens can both be Pro and have different decks.
- 60-Second-Pizza Club
- Our shorthand for ovens whose floors run hot enough to turn out a Neapolitan pie in roughly a minute. Both principals here are in the ~950°F class and both qualify, which is precisely why heat cannot decide this comparison.
Questions, answered
Ooni Koda 2 Pro vs Karu 2 Pro: which should I buy?
The Koda 2 Pro, for most buyers. At our August 8, 2026 check it was $798.95 against the Karu 2 Pro's $849.00, and it bakes an 18 inch pizza against 16 while sitting in the same ~950°F class. It also adds a natural gas option and the Ooni Connect Bluetooth temperature hub. Buy the Karu 2 Pro instead if live wood fire is specifically what you want, because that is the one thing the Koda cannot do at any price.
What is the difference between Ooni Koda and Ooni Karu?
Fuel, and that is the whole distinction. Koda ovens run on gas only. Karu ovens are multi-fuel: wood or charcoal for live-fire flavour, with a gas burner available as an option. Everything else, the heat class, the build quality, the general design philosophy, is shared. Pick the family on fuel first, then pick the model on deck size.
Is wood fired pizza better than gas?
It is different, not strictly better, and the honest answer depends on what you value. Wood adds a smoke character gas cannot reproduce, and the process itself is part of the appeal for a lot of owners. Gas wins on repeatability, on heat recovery between pizzas, and on how often the oven actually gets used, because nothing about it is a project. At the same ~950°F class the crust structure will be comparable; the flavour and the experience will not.
Can the Ooni Karu 2 Pro run on gas?
Yes. That is what multi-fuel means: the Karu 2 Pro takes wood or charcoal for live fire and also accepts a gas burner, so you can run it either way depending on the evening. That optionality is the real argument for buying a Karu over a Koda, because it means choosing wood is a decision you make per cook rather than once at checkout.
Which Ooni Pro oven makes the biggest pizza?
The Koda 2 Pro, at 18 inches maximum, against the Karu 2 Pro's 16. Ooni also publishes a useful detail on the Koda: its 0.8 inch cordierite stone measures 21 inches at the front and 18 at the rear, so the mouth is wider than the maximum pizza and there is more launching and turning room than the headline figure suggests. If you want bigger still, the Koda 2 Max is marketed at 24 inches, with our house data reading the usable floor at 20.
Is the Ooni Karu 2 Pro worth it?
Yes, for the buyer who wants wood, and no for anyone else. For $849.00 you get a ~950°F multi-fuel oven with a 16 inch deck at 61.7 lb, and the ability to cook over real fire whenever you feel like it. But it costs $50.05 more than a gas oven with a bigger deck and no fire to manage, so if wood is a nice-to-have rather than the point, the Koda 2 Pro is the better buy. If you are unsure, the Karu 12 at around $249 is a much cheaper way to test whether fire tending is for you.
